In every country or locality, there is one mainstay at every meal, for example, some countries are very popular to eat bread, some flourish to eat dumplings, and Vietnam is the rice that is indispensable in traditional meals.
However, even though the rice dishes have many varied forms, to help you have a more general view of this particular dish I will share some of the information below and hope it helps for your journey.
Traditional rice dishes of Vietnam
Rice dishes are made with long grain rice with the right amount of water to keep the rice from drying or crushing. This is not considered a food that is often considered a staple to eat in meals. Depending on the region, there are many types of rice and variations of cooking methods.
- Steamed rice (Cơm Trắng): Usually cooked by pot and scooped out for each person during the meal.
- Rice ball (Cơm nắm): cooked rice, slightly steamed. Bring the stuffing and squeeze the towel or grasp the handle. When eating chopsticks with sesame salt, squash (also known as cotton pork), chicken salad, or eat with sausages.
- Broken rice (Cơm Tấm) is popular in South Vietnam, but not in the North. So if you want to join any Hanoi food tour and enjoy this type of rice is impossible. - Bamboo – Tube Rice (Cơm Lam): sliced glutinous rice for bamboo shoots, add water, button carefully with banana leaves and bake the tube over the fire until cooked. This dish is prevalent among ethnic minorities such as the Muong, the Thai.
- Stir fried rice: cooled rice in the fat frying pan, can be combined with many kinds of vegetable (melon, carrot, pomegranate), fruit (pineapple, kiwi), meat Pork rot), spring rolls, grilled fish, and seafood. The fried rice has many variations, but the most popular are the roasted rice mixed with rice, Duong Chau fried rice, seafood fried rice. Some types of fried rice are wrapped in lotus leaf with a very delicious taste.
- Mussel rice: Hue specialty. Rice mixed with mussel, chili and herbs are served with a bowl of mussel boiled water.
- Chicken rice with herbs: rice cooked in the body of chicken with some kinds of herbs, with special taste. However, this dish is less popular.
